Add your commentMy dad used to drive a bus on the Route 28 corridor back in the 90s and he always said Loudoun would never get rail because the developers and the car dealers had too much influence on the county board. He passed away in 2019 and never got to see Ashburn station open. I rode it for the first time the week it launched and cried a little bit at the platform. Corny? Sure. But some things are bigger than parking spaces and train schedules.
I'll say this much — I drove to Dulles every single morning for 11 years, sat in that soul-crushing 267 traffic, and swore if Metro ever came I'd never look back. Now I take the Silver Line from Ashburn station to Rosslyn three days a week and honestly? It's not perfect but it changed my life. My blood pressure medication dosage went DOWN. That's not a joke. Was it worth the wait? For me personally, absolutely yes.
The parking situation is a complete disaster and anyone who says otherwise hasn't tried to get a spot after 7:45am. I got there at 8:10 last Tuesday and drove around for 20 minutes before giving up and going home to work remote. What exactly was the point of building a world-class transit station if you surround it with a parking lot that fills up before most people's alarms go off?
Born and raised in Ashburn — went to Broad Run, my kids go to Broad Run now. I watched this county triple in population while the roads turned into parking lots. Anyone who thinks the Silver Line wasn't worth it needs to explain to me what the alternative was. More lanes on Route 7? Another interchange on the Greenway? We were drowning in cars. Is the Metro perfect? No. But perfect wasn't on the table. Progress was.
moved here from chicago 8 months ago and honestly ashburn folks need to relax a little. yes the trains don't come every 4 minutes like the red line downtown. yes the parking is tight. but you have METRO. do you know how many suburbs would kill for this? loudoun county fought this project for years and now people are complaining the gift wrap wasn't pretty enough
Fun fact most people forget: Loudoun County actually VOTED to join the Silver Line extension back in 2012 after years of back and forth, and the final price tag for the whole Phase 2 came in somewhere around $3 billion. THREE. BILLION. DOLLARS. For a line that runs every 12 minutes during rush hour and still doesn't connect directly to National Airport without a transfer downtown. I'm not saying it was wrong to build it, I'm saying we deserved a lot more accountability on what we got for that money.
Counterpoint to everyone complaining about frequency: Metro literally publishes the schedule. If you know trains come every 10-12 minutes off peak, plan accordingly?? I feel like people expected this to run like Tokyo subway and got mad when it runs like... American public transit. Manage expectations people.
ok someone correct me if im wrong but i heard the Silver Line actually goes all the way to Dulles Airport which means you can check your bags AT the Ashburn station before you board. thats the whole reason i supported this thing. can someone confirm because my neighbor said thats not actually how it works and now im embarrassed
