My daughter's daycare charges $1 per minute after 6pm. Do the math. This isn't complaining. This is a financial reality for families.
Born and raised in Council Bluffs. Lived here 41 years. That stretch during the 7-8am window is genuinely, legitimately, scientifically the worst part of my day. I've timed it. On a good day it's 14 minutes to get from my house near Broadway to my office off Dodge. On a bad day — and bad days are 4 out of 5 — it's 38 to 45 minutes. For a metro this size, that is embarrassing. Stop telling me it's not that bad. It's that bad.
The bus answer gets brought up every single time and I want to address it directly: not everyone works downtown Omaha. I work in Millard. There is no bus to Millard from Council Bluffs. Problem solved? No. Problem not solved.

Okay I'm going to be the contrarian here: I moved from the Chicago suburbs two years ago and you all have absolutely no idea what bad traffic looks like. None. I merge onto I-480 every morning and I'm across that bridge in under 20 minutes on a rough day. In Naperville I spent 55 minutes going 8 miles. Perspective, people.
Moved away in 2018, visit family a couple times a year. Every single visit someone mentions the 480 bridge. Every. Single. One. If it was just complaining culture it would've gotten old by now. It hasn't gotten old because nothing has gotten fixed.
The bridge itself isn't even the main problem and I wish people understood this. The real chokepoint is the interchange where 480 meets 80 on the Nebraska side. That merge is designed like someone did it on a cocktail napkin in 1967. Which, come to think of it, is probably exactly what happened.
That's not accurate — NDOT did significant rehabilitation work on the bridge deck in 2009 and there were lane restriction projects as recently as 2019. Please don't spread misinformation as fun facts, it muddies the actual infrastructure conversation which deserves serious attention.
I actually think the Missouri River itself is underrated as a scenic commute and I refuse to be fully miserable about it. Yes traffic is bad. Yes the infrastructure is aging. But you're crossing a genuinely beautiful river twice a day and sometimes the sunrise off that water is something else. Small mercies.
Counterpoint nobody asked for: maybe the real problem is that Council Bluffs chose to develop residential sprawl way faster than it ever coordinated with Omaha on cross-river infrastructure. This isn't a natural disaster, it's a decades-long planning failure on both sides and voters kept electing the same people. Hard to be too sympathetic when the electorate had tools to demand better.
My uncle works for the city and he says there are three separate studies sitting on a shelf somewhere that all recommended the same fix like eight years ago and nothing ever got funded. Not saying I know the details but that tracks with everything I've ever seen from local government here. Study it, shelf it, study it again.
fun fact the I-480 bridge was built in 1970 and hasn't had a major structural overhaul since. it is literally older than most of the people complaining about it. just putting that out there.

Genuinely asking — why don't more Council Bluffs folks just take the Metro Transit bus across? They run pretty regular routes. I switched about 18 months ago and I read two books a month now instead of gripping my steering wheel until my knuckles go white.
