Add your commentI'll say what nobody wants to say: the city's own leadership hasn't helped. For years the economic pitch to businesses was basically 'we're close to Omaha!' which is self-defeating by definition. Why would a company plant a flag here for that reason when they could just... go to Omaha? You want investment, you lead with what makes you irreplaceable, not with proximity to somewhere else. Some newer folks at city hall get this. Most don't yet.
Born and raised in CB, and honestly? It bothers me more than I want to admit. I remember when the riverfront was actually being talked about as something special, when the trails were getting attention on their own merits. Now every article about this city starts with 'just across the river from Omaha' like we need their permission to exist. We have Lewis and Clark history, we have the golden spike moment, we have Grenville Dodge's house sitting right there. But sure, let's just be the discount gas station for Dodge Street commuters.
My grandmother used to take me to Bayliss Park when I was little. Sat by the fountain, fed the ducks, watched the Christmas lights in December. That park, that square, that whole feeling of a small city with its own heartbeat — that's not Omaha. That's ours. I don't think you can buy that kind of identity, you either have it or you don't. Council Bluffs has it. We just stopped talking about it.
The casino branding absolutely killed us. The second you let yourself become known as the place people drive to when they want to gamble and then leave, you've made your bed. Every economic development conversation in this city for fifteen years has had to fight against that image. I sit on a neighborhood association board and I can tell you the number of young professionals who say 'oh I didn't even know there was stuff to do in CB that wasn't Horseshoe' is genuinely depressing.
Council Bluffs was actually the original eastern terminus of the transcontinental railroad, not Omaha. People always get this wrong and it drives me absolutely up the wall. The Union Pacific was headquartered HERE. Abe Lincoln himself designated Council Bluffs as the starting point. If anything Omaha should be known as the Nebraska side of Council Bluffs.
grew up here, moved to denver in 2019, still follow local news out of habit i guess. from the outside looking in CB has more of an actual small-city character than people give it credit for. the problem is the people who live there are so used to apologizing for not being omaha that they can't see it. stop apologizing. weird authentic mid-size iowa city with hills and history is a whole vibe if you lean into it
The trails are legitimately excellent, since someone asked. The Wabash Trace alone is 63 miles into southern Iowa and it's beautiful. Loess Hills access is real and underrated. You will not be disappointed on that front. Come for the trails, stay because your rent is $800 less than Omaha for the same square footage.
^ this is technically debatable, the actual driving of spikes and construction operations centered on Omaha but I appreciate the passion lol
unpopular opinion maybe but who cares lol. i moved here 3 years ago from des moines specifically because rent was cheaper and i could still get to a real airport and real restaurants without living in nebraska. the 'greater omaha' thing works FOR us not against us. stop being precious about it
Nope. Hard disagree with the whole premise. Embrace greater Omaha, grow the metro, stop the inferiority complex. Nobody in the Kansas City suburbs cries about being 'just the Missouri side of KC.' Regional identity is a feature not a bug.
