Roads on West Miller Street look like the surface of the moon. I'm paying more for less every single cycle and nobody at the county level seems to even pretend to care anymore.
My grandmother owned a home on Maple Avenue for thirty years. When she passed we had to sell it partly because none of us could afford the taxes on a modest three-bedroom. That house had been in our family since 1971. I think about that a lot. These taxes aren't just inconvenient — they're actually breaking up long-term families and hollowing out the town.
Counterpoint nobody wants to hear: a huge chunk of your property tax goes to the school district, not to potholes. People conflate these two completely different buckets constantly. Newark Central spends it on staff salaries, benefits, and state-mandated programs. You want better roads? That's a different fight with a different office. Know who to be mad at before you show up swinging.

Honestly the real problem is that Wayne County gets almost zero state aid compared to downstate counties and nobody in Albany cares because we dont have enough votes to matter. Its not local mismanagement its structural abandonment. Same story in like 40 other upstate counties. Scream at your county legislature all you want, they're working with scraps.
I want someone to challenge me on this: name ONE tangible service improvement in Newark in the last five years that justifies the tax increases over that same period. I'll wait. And no, repainting the crosswalk on Vienna Street doesn't count.
ok so i just moved here from Rochester about eight months ago because i thought i could actually afford something in Wayne County and yeah the house prices are lower but then the tax bill arrived and i was like... this is not what i signed up for. my friend in Greece pays less and her roads are PAVED.
Fun fact: New York has the highest property taxes in the entire nation. Not Wayne County specifically — the WHOLE STATE. So yes they're too high. Next question.
Actually I'm pretty sure Texas has the highest property taxes in the country, not New York. New York gets tagged with that title because of income and overall cost but Texas homeowners routinely pay 2-3% effective rates which is higher than what we see here. Not defending our bills — they're brutal — but let's be accurate about it at least.
